BBC Radio Norfolk interview

On 30th August I was interviewed by Matthew Gudgin on BBC Norfolk about the Berlin Wall - built 50 years ago that month - and my MA exhibition on Berliners' post-Wall perceptions.

My NUCA exhibition profile's been moved to another page.

Propaganda across Intra-Korean Border

The Korean peninsula has been divided between South and North Koreas since the end of the Korean War in 1953, with Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) stretching 2km on each sides of the border: it is "the most heavily armed border in the world", and a popular tourist destination [Korea Tourism Organization, 2010].

Since the sinking of the South Korean navy corvette Cheonan, both sides have intensified propaganda operations across the border in attempts to reach citizens across the border, broadcasting through loud speakers and radio. Activists in South Korea have been floating helium balloons with leaflets, in an effort to deliver messages to citizens in North Korean (BBC, 2010), where the government threatening to close up its border (Branigan, 2010).

The Secret Life of the Berlin Wall: BBC

“It was understood that the wall was better than a war.”

The Secret Life of the Berlin Wall shows the divided city and its two sides, heroes and villains, and “a world of good intentions heading in bad directions. A world where nothing is what it seems to be”. It claims;
“the wall was the victor. It got bigger, more sophisticated, more efficient. The wall was here to stay, and so were the people behind the wall.”
The program shows people who lived under two opposing systems, and their opinions: “Sure there were 30 types of cheese in the West and only three here. And only one tasted good. So what – what is more important?”

Günter Schabowski claims the border would have been opened within hours, and what he had said at the press conference was no mistake.

Where is the Wall Now?

BBC has collected photographs and video footages of the Wall in various parts of the world: some were chipped away by tourists and some larger chunks were donated to organisations [BBC, 2009]. Most of these postings are in Europe and North America, and can be viewed on the interactive world map.

Honolulu Community College is one of three sites in America to own a section of the Wall [HCC, 2009], and a section from Checkpoint Charlie was taken and was placed at the HQ of the CIA (2009).

The Rise and the Fall

This BBC news footage was first broadcast on 16th August 1961, only 3 days after the construction of the Wall began. The reporter claims that the border guards allowed some people to cross the border at this time [BBC, 2009]. The clip below is a news report from Berlin aired on 10th November 1989, a day after the Berlin Wall was opened  to the people to cross freely.

Core within

"The latest research, published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS), found that a wave precisely targeted through the inner core behaved differently depending on which part of the core it travelled through." (BBC, 2002)
