La Jetée (dir: Chris Marker) released in 1964 is a science-fiction film about time and memory, and is considered to be among the greatest experimental films. The story is based on "an experiment in recovering and changing the past through the action of memory" after a nuclear apocalypse, and composed almost entirely of black-and-white still photographs [MIT, 2010].
